Development proposals and assessments

There were two concurrent workshops on this topic at the forum.

One (in Ballroom 1) was facilitated by Ms Dianne Knott, Associate Director, Public Policy URBIS and Mr David Broyd, Group Manager Sustainable Planning, Port Stephens Council.

The other  (in Ballroom 2) was facilitated by Ms Lucy Turnbull AO, Deputy Chair, the Committee for Sydney and Mr Stephen Albin, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Development Institute of Australia.

The range of issues discussed included:

  • the need for clarity of roles of various state and local agencies in the assessment process
  • the importance of pre-development application processes in identifying key issues early
  • the need for e-planning
  • the need for certainty in the identified approval pathways
  • the importance of strategic plan-making
  • the need for planners to be facilitators of good development
  • the need for standard form development applications across the state
  • the need for best practice community engagement
  • the need for a more dynamic metric for assessing regional significant projects
  • the need to encourage innovation in planning.
